Mobility Series (3/3): How To Choose The Right Bed Rail

Guest post by The Golden Concepts

With so many options of bed rails out there, how do you know which one to choose?

To help you out, we've come up with a list of what to look out for when looking for the right bed rail:

1. Needs of User

  • Requires assistance in getting out of bed?

  • Prone to falling out of bed?

  • Intended for portable use?

2. Type of Bed

  • Divan type?

  • Framed?

3. Features Required

  • Length of bed rail?

  • Assisted by caregivers?

Here are some types of bed rail available:

A. For mild assistance in getting out of bed and maximum portability

The Golden Concepts’ lightweight "travel series" bed rails such as Econorail and Bed Rail Advantage Traveler are perfect. Easy to install, they fit onto any bed (Divan or framed) and can be installed and removed in seconds.

Another handy device is the Bed Caddie, which has a ladder-like design, making sitting up easy.

B. For mild assistance in getting out of bed with no need for portability

A Bedcane provides the perfect support for getting out of bed with its unique ergonomic handle. Most suitable for Divan type beds.

C. For moderate assistance in getting out of bed and partial fall prevention

The Stable Rail and Mobility Bed Rail have two supporting legs , and the Mobility Bed Rail has an additional swing-out arm to help the user stand up from bed. These bed rails are most suitable for Divan type beds of minimum 13.5" in height.

D. For preventing falls out of bed

The EZ Adjust Bed Rail is the most extensively-featured bed rail and is perfect for preventing falls. It is the only bed rail in the market which is adjustable in length, which allows it to be adjusted to stretch the entire length of the bed.

Another key feature is the collapsible feature, which allows it to be folded down 180 degrees to the side of the bed, so users can get out of bed easily. This feature is also particularly useful for caregivers to help lift elderly persons out of bed.

It is suited for both Divan and frame type beds. However, for framed beds, the collapsible feature may not work as the frame may impede the folding down function. Instead, you can consider installing the bed rail nearer to the upper half of the body so that the user can still get out of bed.

Last by not least, choosing the right bed rails is a huge step for fall prevention in the bedroom!
